Home Tuition

Home Tuition is suitable for students who are in mainstream schooling. The purpose of the tutoring is to support students with their learning and understanding of topics being taught in their school classes.

Every student learns in a different way and at a different pace. With school class sizes now exceeding thirty students, the average one-to-one time spent with a teacher each lesson can be less than one minute. Home Tuition ensures that students become confident with each topic and build a solid knowledge base, which results in more effective revision and successful exam technique.

Home Tuition sessions are dedicated one-to-one tutoring classes carried out at the student's home, via the internet. The sessions include a wide variety of teaching resources and approaches tailored to the individual student. The tuition takes place in an encouraging and friendly environment which allows students to explore their knowledge, identify any misconceptions, and take positive steps in their understanding. The aim of each session is for students to become comfortable with each topic and ready to progress their learning in their school classes.

Exam Revision

Exam revision sessions take place either as regular sessions leading up to exams or one-off revision days to consolidate understanding and revision technique.

Exam revision is crucial for students who want to perform well in their exams. How a student revisits all the information learned throughout the year will affect their confidence and ability to work calmly through exam questions on the day.

Every student will recall information in a different way and will need to revise in a way that reflects their strengths and weaknesses.

Exam revision sessions are tailored to the individual student and ensure they maximise their time and effort when revising. The sessions combine a mixture of practice techniques and revision strategies to be put in place.

Exam Revision sessions are available for the following:

11+ entrance exam
SATS
End of Year assessments (often used for setting in the following year)
GCSE exams
A Level exams
IB Diploma
Entrance Scholarship Exams (including the STEP exam)
Professional competence exams

Temporary Home Schooling

There are many reasons why a student may be unable to attend school for a short period of time, but even missing one week of formal education can really set back a student's learning. Mathematics is a subject that builds upon knowledge each lesson, which means missing one lesson can impact a student's understanding of an entire topic.

Temporary Home Schooling gives continuity to ensure students can pick up their lessons as normal when they can return to school. The lessons are tailored to the student and include working with material set by the school and contacting the school if necessary to find out what lessons have been missed.

Long-term Home Schooling

For students who are home schooled or are in medical care, my tutoring provision takes a much longer view. I work with the student and supporting adults to curate an appropriate scheme of work which can be followed over the course of a year.

This will be tailored to the student's abilities, ambitions and interests, with an option of following a typical school's curriculum to prepare for exams or an alternative curriculum to meet the needs of a rapidly changing future job market.

Lessons will be delivered using a combination of instruction, practice and regular assessment and feedback, with work set for independent study. These are fully planned and prepared to follow a structured learning schedule.

Within a normal school environment, students would typically receive 3-4 hours per week of maths. In a dedicated one-to-one environment 2-3 hours per week is usually sufficient, with independent study time to supplement this. It is recommended that you book 2 - 3 hours in a single morning or afternoon block, to be spaced out with additional breaks which incur no charge.

SEND Tutoring

Students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities are often grouped together by teachers, but every student will require a different approach to make their learning as effective and positive as possible. The unfortunate reality is that schools and tutors do not always have the experience necessary to properly teach and encourage students with Special Education Needs and Disabilities.

I have lots of experience teaching students with a range of needs, with a specific focus on students with ASC and ADD/ADHD. My experience has taught me that the advice and guidance on teaching students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities is never quite as helpful as what you can develop from a dedicated relationship with the student as an individual. Providing tailored tutoring on a one-to-one basis ensures the student develops confidence in their own abilities and trusts that the content being taught to them is suited to their strengths, which cannot always be achieved in a school environment.

For students with more severe learning, developmental or communication difficulties I will be happy to provide a free 30-minute consultation to talk to the student and supporting adult to see if tutoring is right for them.

Adult Education

There are many reasons why an adult may wish to develop their skills in mathematics further, for example:

For their own curiosity and self development, or to improve self esteem;
To gain a required maths qualification as an entry requirement to a new job role or high level course; or
To help with the mathematical elements of another training program.
